Reducing Enemies

Turning blogs into a newspaper sounds like a shot in the dark of a try to merge two very different media. Ben Terrett and Russell Davies gave it a try anyway – just for fun. The result is suprisingly nice! Titled «Things Our Friends Have Written On The Internet 2008» their publication documents blog posts, tweets and pictures they've selected from their favourite resources on the internet. As they got the chance to realize their idea in the form of a real tabloid newspaper format, they had to face the conditions and challenges this enterprise holds.

Now Terrett recently wrote a more detailled post in his blog «Noisy Decent Graphics» about the concept of this publication and its design process. There he describes his idea of good graphic design as follows:

To me this is what good design is about, reducing the enemies.
What means in a way keeping things simple – in this case by chosing one font for the whole publication but implementing the finesse through little variations in the detail. So I suggest having a look for yourself. More pictures of the final production process they pooled on Flickr. I already ordered my copy of TOFHWOTI2008 two days ago and will post a «closer look» later.
