The t-shirts as an object of design
T-shirts have always been much more than just a piece of cloth. They are a kind of medium which communicates statements, transform the body into a personal display window. Whether typographically formulated political statements or other kindes of graphical art: The T-shirt has become a personal expression of the one who wears it. It is a confession to ideas and attitudes and in this manner a piece of the construct called identity.
I was just inquired by Thorsten Mechnig, founder of the T-shirt shop getshirts.de, about contributing to the shop's own blog (sadly written in German only) as a guest blogger by giving inputs about creative issues from time to time. Because I think the T-shirt is a very exciting phenomenon of pop culture and visual culture in general, I just agreed. I truly hope that these contributions will help to inspire the community of shirt-designers there to do more and better works, because the range of subjects is currently less than convincing. Let's see what the written word really is capable of.
